  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Icon
  4. Manager version 3.1b.
  5.  
  6. OVERVIEW
  7. --------
  8. Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
  9. icons in the Windows operating environment.  The
  10. same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
  11. allows icons to easily be moved, copied, and organ-
  12. ized into files within Icon Manager.  Unlike other
  13. applications which offer awkward procedures for
  14. installing icons into Program Manager, Icon Manager
  15. will install icons into Program Manager or Norton
  16. Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of Windows'
  17. Dynamic Data Exchange.  For those who would like
  18. to create or edit their own icons, Icon Manager
  19. taps the power of OLE to whisk you into a edit
  20. session with Paintbrush by just double-clicking on
  21. an icon.  All of these features and more make
  22. Icon Manager the most complete icon tool available
  23. for the Windows operating environment.  (A 32-bit
  24. version of Icon Manager has already won first place
  25. in its class in the Microsoft Windows NT Shareware
  26. Contest during Fall Comdex '92).

  28. REGISTRATION
  29. ------------
  30. Icon Manager is not free software.  It is released
  31. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  32. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  33. Complete information on how to register Icon Manager
  34. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
  35.  
  36. DOCUMENTATION
  37. -------------
  38. Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
  39. aspects of program operation.  Some customers have
  40. asked why Icon Manager does not come with an oper-
  41. ations manual.  The main reason for this is that
  42. since the first release of Icon Manager in 1990,
  43. Impact Software has never asked registered users
  44. for an upgrade fee.  New versions that users
  45. acquire from their shareware channel continue to
  46. honor earlier registrations.  By including on-line
  47. help with each release, we are able to provide up-
  48. to-date information for new and old customers
  49. alike.
  50.  
  51. This is not intended to suggest that upgrade
  52. version will always be free, but rather that
  53. this method of providing documentation makes
  54. it easier for us to provide no-charge updates
  55. when possible.

  57.  
  58. INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
  59. -----------------------
  60. The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
  61. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  62. You should place all of the files included in the package
  63. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  64. drive.
  65.  
  66. SETUP requires about 210K bytes of hard disk space to
  67. complete the installation of Icon Manager.
  68.  
  69. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  70. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  71. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  72. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
  73. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  74.  
  75. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  76. to install Icon Manager to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  77. default or enter a directory of your choice.  Select OK
  78. to install Icon Manager.

  81. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.1 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  82. -----------------------------------------------
  83.  
  84. The following additions and changes have been added in
  85. the 3.1 release of Icon Manager:
  86.  
  87.   - Icon Archive files now store a description for an
  88.     icon.  If you open earlier versions of archive files
  89.     the descriptions will be "(Untitled)".  Icon Manager
  90.     will read old format icon archives.  Their "changed"
  91.     flag will be automatically set when they are opened.
  92.     When you select to save them they will be written in
  93.     the new format.
  94.  
  95.     (Version 3.1a allows icon descriptions to be used in
  96.     icon library files as well.)
  97.  
  98.   - Icon windows act more like Program Manager's.  There
  99.     is a "current selection" for each window.  The icon
  100.     description will be highlighted in archive windows.
  101.     All other windows display a dotted frame around the
  102.     current selection.  Use the mouse or keyboard arrow
  103.     keys to move the icon selection.
  104.  
  105.   - The right mouse button can be clicked on any icon to
  106.     display a popup menu of actions that can be performed
  107.     on the icon.
  108.  
  109.   - Icons can now be edited via an OLE session with
  110.     Windows Paintbrush by double-clicking on them.
  111.  
  112.   - Icons can be installed *directly* into Program Manager
  113.     using the Install Icon function.  A supporting *.ICO
  114.     file is created to be used by Program Manager when (if)
  115.     your video display format changes.  The Reconcile
  116.     Configuration function can be used at any time to cause
  117.     Icon Manager to look for ICO files it created which are
  118.     no longer in use by Program Manager.

  120.   - Icon Manager takes advantage of the sound capabilities
  121.     of Windows 3.1.  Select the File.Sound menu option to
  122.     configure your audio preferences.  If you have the
  123.     hardware to play digital *.WAV sounds, you can request
  124.     sound effects associated with the drag and drop as
  125.     well as deletion operations on icons.

  137.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  138.  
  139.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  140.  Manager on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  141.  whether Icon Manager is suitable for their needs.  The use
  142.  of Icon Manager, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  143.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  144.  Manager, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  145.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  146.  strictly prohibited.
  147.  
  148.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Manager
  149.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  150.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  151.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  152.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  153.  one user at a time.
  154.  
  155.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Manager executable files
  156.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  157.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  158.  
  159.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Manager
  160.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  161.  limitations, and also the following:
  162.  
  163.   1)    Icon Manager and all of its release files must be copied
  164.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  165.         this license information.
  166.  
  167.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  168.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  169.  
  170.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  171.            may make Icon Manager available for downloading only as
  172.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  173.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  174.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  175.            charge for the download of Icon Manager.
  176.  
  177.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  178.            the ASP may distribute Icon Manager, subject to the
  179.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  180.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Manager only after
  181.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  182.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  183.            details (enclose your catalog).

  185.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  186.            Icon Manager diskette to their members, subject to
  187.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  188.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  189.            not to exceed five dollars.

  191.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  192.  
  193.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  194.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  195.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  196.   purchase.
  197.  
  198.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  199.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  200.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  201.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  202.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  203.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  204.  
  205.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  206.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  207.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  208.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  209.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  210.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  211.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  212.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  213.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  214.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  215.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  216.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  217.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  218.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  220.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  221.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  222.   contents.

  224.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  225.  
  226.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  227.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  228.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
